Congrats to my man Hideki Matsuyama for winning the 2021 Masters. What a guy. First man from Japan to win a major golf tournament. When he rolled in that final putt on Sunday, the world saw the newest Masters Champion but I all I could see was a fire Freshly Squeezed story. So here it is - the incredible story of Scotty Cameron. If you’ve never heard the name, just know he’s really good at making putters (that flat thing you use on the green)... At the ripe old age of 6, Scotty fell in love with the game of golf. His dad would take him out to hit some balls, roll some puts, and play some holes – but it wasn’t quite enough. Scotty became infatuated with the clubs themselves and soon started tinkering with them in his garage. His dad showed him how to put on grips, add weights, and shape club heads. By the age of 11, the kid was getting his friends to test out his prototypes on the course. When his dad passed away, the last thing he said to Scotty was, “I think you have a future in the game of golf”. Scotty tried to turn professional but there was just one problem - he wasn’t too good at putting. He was too busy thinking about building the putter instead of using the putter. Imagine that. So, he said goodbye to his professional dream and started Scotty Cameron International in 1992. There were bumps along the way, but it has been all uphill from there. You ever heard of a guy named Tiger Woods? Yeah - he won 14 majors with a Scotty in the bag. And you know who else uses one of Scotty’s putters? That’s right – Hideki Matsuyama. Scotty is just a California garage-tinkerer doing what he loves to do. Nothing more, nothing less. **Read more FS Stories here.
